Southland Charity Hospital

Invercargill, Southland

One of the greatest legacies created due of the work of Melissa Vining and her late husband Blair has been the formation of the Southland Charity Hospital. The hospital was founded by the community, for the community. Once completed, it will provide free services to those in the southern half of New Zealand who are unable to access care through the public or private health systems.

The concept for the hospital has paid particular attention to creating a multi-purpose facility designed with the future in mind: for instance, the operating theatre has been designed to the same standard and size as a full-scale operating theatre that could be used for more intensive surgeries, rather than the exploratory procedures the Southland Charity Hospital intends to initially perform. Provision has also been made for a dental suite.

Bonisch has volunteered their services to the project, with Boyd Wilson acting as development manager for the project and the Bonisch team preparing the concept plans, resource consent applications and detailed design plans.

Bonisch was also instrumental in locating a site for the hospital.
